Hearts & Lungs, Hands & Giving: Transforming Lives in The Gambia with GACC
The GamAmeri Cardiopulmonary Center (GACC) is a nonprofit organization that aims to provide comprehensive, top notch diagnostic and treatment of heart and lung diseases, in The Gambia. The GACC is aware of the fact that the burden of cardiopulmonary diseases and their associated social and biological risk factors are on the increase in the country. The GACC hopes to contribute to the current efforts of the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in building capacities for the prevention, care and control of CPDs. By raising awareness of the community and individuals, for the management, prevention and control of CPD’s and being aware of the need to establish a suitable organization and medical facility to offer quality care, education in promoting healthy lifestyles and enhancing the quality of life of the Gambian population.
Bridging the Gap: Advancing Healthcare Equity in The Gambia
About 48.6% of the Gambian population lives below the national poverty line, which in turn, negatively affects access to healthcare. Due to the incidences of communicable and non-communicable diseases, developing more equitable healthcare access is a key objective in The Gambia. Review of the World health Organization’s data from The Gambia shows that 32% of total deaths are due to non-communicable diseases, which are preventable. Within this group of diseases, cardiopulmonary disease makes up a substantial proportion of these deaths. Without appropriate facilities and staff to provide access to medical care in geographically under-served areas, there is an increased risk for new infections and exacerbation of chronic illness
